How to Measure the Water Current of the Yalong River

Explore Yalong River, its flow characteristics, and how to measure with ADCP, including equipment needs and selection.

1. Location of the Yalong River

The Yalong River is one of the major rivers in China. It is situated in the southwestern part of the People's Republic of China, flowing mainly through Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. It originates from Bayan Har Mountain and passes through mountain areas, valleys, and forests.

It forms an important part of all the water systems in this area. The water also serves for irrigation purposes for crops such as corn, potatoes, and many types of fruits along regions it passes. On the riverside, many small villages and towns are dependent on the river for domestic water supply and other water-related activities. The Yalong River has abundant hydropower resources and is an essential waterway from which much energy is drawn.

The river possesses a very diversified ecosystem. It hosts numerous fish species, while its banks and shores are home to a wide range of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and other amphibians. The floodplains and wetlands associated with the river have an important role to play in maintaining ecological balance within the area.

2. Flow Rate Characteristics of the Yalong River

Several circumstances prescribe the flow of the Yalong River and reflect some seasonal and regional peculiarities. Usually, during the wet season, from June to September, under the influence of the southwest monsoon climate, the river increases considerably in its flow rate. Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment area and melting of glaciers in the source region promote a mass of water downstream.

During the dry season, or from October to May, the flow rate decreases but still retains a base flow that is important for the survival of fish and to support the water-dependent activities of the local communities. At an average, the flow rate could be from just several hundreds of cubic meters per second during the dry season up to several thousands of cubic meters per second during the peak of the wet season.

3. Methods for Measuring the Water Current of Yalong River

Velocity Meter Method

The conventional method mainly comprises a mechanical or electrical velocity meter. These are placed at observation points along the river, which measure the speed of the water directly at that location. However, to fully comprehend the general trend in water current several measurements across various depths and sections of the river should be done. Given the length and tortuousness of the region that Yalong River flows through, this might prove quite laborous and time-consuming. There is, however, a more convenient and technologically advanced way of measuring water currents.

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) Method.

It is based on the detection of the movement of water particles through the use of sound waves. It can measure the velocity of water at more depths simultaneously by emitting acoustic signals and analyzing the Doppler shift of the reflected signals. It gives a fine profile of the water current, providing more detailed information about the flow conditions of the whole river. ADCP current meter can be installed on boats, bridges, or even deployed on buoys for a continuous measurement.

Buoy Method

The buoy method: the buoys, cast into the river, carry sensors that measure motion of the water around them. Floating on the surface, they can give some indication about the surface current. However, they may not model the complexity in water current quite as well as the other methods, especially in order to determine variations in velocity at greater depths.

Of these, ADCP current profiler is the most sophisticated and efficient way of measuring the water current of the Yalong River.

4. How ADCPs Using the Doppler Principle Work

The basis of operation for ADCP flow meter is the Doppler principle. When an ADCP sends an acoustic signal into the water, the sound waves travel in water and interact with moving water particles. Due to the Doppler effect, since the water particles are moving, the frequency of the reflected sound waves is changed.

If the water particles are moving towards the ADCP meter, then the reflected wave frequency would be higher than the emitted frequency. In the case when the water particles move away from the ADCP profiler, the frequency of the reflected waves would be lower. Precise measurement of such frequency changes enables the ADCP to find the velocity of water particles at various depths.

This gives the ADCP a set of discrete velocity measurements at different depths; it then sums these up to obtain the full current profile. In this way, one can understand in fine detail how the water is flowing not just at the surface but throughout the vertical section of the river.

5. Requirements for High Quality Measurement of the Yalong River Currents

This equipment should meet some characteristics that constitute high-quality measurement of the Yalong River currents.

It should have reliability in material that constitutes the equipment. It has to take harsh conditions of a river environment through water exposure, sediment exposure, and temperature fluctuations. It must be durable by the variable flow of the Yalong River and debris carried along the flow during high-flow periods.

Besides, small size, lightweight, and low power consumption are also desirable. Indeed, having a small, light device has the definite advantage of better handling and installation, whether on a boat or attached to a buoy. Low consumption gives an advantage to the fact that the equipment can work several hours without the need for constant battery replacements or access to a continuous source of power.

Another important reason is cost-effectiveness. Being the low-cost alternative allows the measurement equipment to be used in a much wider capacity, offering a much higher level of scrutiny with regard to the river.

Regarding the casing of the ADCP, using a titanium alloy will really be suitable. For such applications, there is a need for corrosion resistance, which is very high in the case of the titanium alloy, especially when applied to water bodies like the Yalong River, where it would be in continuous contact with water and possible corrosive elements. Also, properties of strength and toughness make the material adequate to resist impacts and variations of pressure during deployment and operation. In addition, it has relatively low density to contribute to the overall goal of keeping the equipment light.

6. Selection of Correct Equipment for Current Measurement

To select the right equipment to measure the current of the Yalong River, one needs to consider several factors.

Based on Purpose of Use

HADCP would apply when the intention is toward a horizontal measurement of the river current. HADCPs are meant to give very accurate measurements of the flow of water in the horizontal plane, useful in understanding the overall movement of water across a particular section of the river.

An ADCP should be selected which, particularly for the purpose, is meant for vertically analyzing the river current. Vertical ADCPs measure the water velocity at varied depths highly accurately; these, in turn, provide a highly detailed profile of how the water flows vertically in the river.

Based on the Frequency

The frequency range used depends on the depth of the water in the Yalong River. Normally, up to 70 meters, a 600 kHz ADCP will suffice for the measurements. The 600 kHz frequency provides good resolution and accuracy for measuring the water current in relatively shallower waters.

While for deeper waters, say above 70 meters up to about 110 meters, a 300 kHz is more suitable. In this respect, the 300 kHz lower frequency can penetrate deep into the water and still manage reliable measurements of the water current.

Some of the well-known brands of ADCP include Teledyne RDI, Nortek, and Sontek. However, for those seeking a cost - effective option with excellent quality, the China Sonar PandaADCP is worth considering. It is made of all - titanium alloy material, offering both durability and reliability. With its remarkable cost - performance ratio, it provides a great alternative for measuring the water current of the Yalong River.
