How to Measure Water Current of the Don River?

Learn about Don River, its flow rate, and how to measure its water current using ADCP, including working principle, equipment needs, and selection.

1. Where is the Don River?

The Don River is one of the major rivers in Russia. It begins in the town of Novomoskovsk, not far away from the Central Russian Upland. From there it moves south for approximately 1,870 kilometers across the Russian steppe and pours into the Sea of Azov.

It is a great part of Russian landscape and history. Quite a number of cities and towns are situated on its bank, such as Rostov-on-Don. These towns have been developed around this very river. The Don River has been a great transportation route for years and centuries. Centuries earlier, it was a transit way of such goods like grain, timber, and others. It also played an important part during military campaigns.

It provides shelter to a great deal of species diversity both in animals and plants: within the floodplains, grasslands, shrubs take over the place providing shelter for wild boars, deer, and species of birds. The Don River was part of an important ecosystem that had an effect on the water table of the surrounding countries and soil quality.

2. What is the Flow Rate of the Don River Like?

In this case, the flow rate of the Don River significantly differs not only by season but also according to climatic conditions. The general level of flow is governed mainly by rainfall and snowmelt in its catchment area. During springtime, when there is melting snow in the topmost reaches of the river basin, the flow rate of the river increases significantly. During this time, average flows can be from several thousands up to tens of thousands of cubic meters per second.

It is in summer and early fall that the flow in the Don River diminishes. Besides, the flow of the river is regulated depending on the presence of dams and reservoirs that exist along the course. These facilities are used for storing water, controlling floods, and generating hydroelectric power. This may be positive or negative for both the ecology of the river and the communities that have come to rely on it.

Flowing of the Don River maintains the ecological balance in those areas that it passes through. It provides irrigation for the agricultural purposes, it sustains the aquatic life, and it plays the major role in the hydrological cycle of the region in question.

3. How to Measure Water Current of Don River?

There are a number of ways to measure the water current of the Don River. The usual methods of measurement involve current meters and floats. Current meters are deployed in direct contact with the water at certain points to measure the velocity. The floats are thrown into the water and their movement over some known distance and time are observed to estimate the surface current speed.

However, one step further in advanced and efficient methods would be using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers, or ADCPs. The ADCP current meter will be able to provide advanced knowledge of the current profile of the river.

3.1 How do ADCPs Using the Doppler Principle Work?

Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) is based on the principle of the Doppler effect. They shoot acoustic pulses into the water. The interaction of these pulses with the moving particles of water changes the frequency of the reflected pulses due to the Doppler effect. Thus, interrogating this frequency shift calculates the velocity of the water at different depths.

These are equipped with various transducers radiating acoustic signals in different directions, enabling the instrument to measure both horizontal and vertical components of water current. This allows a three-dimensional mapping of the water current to be achieved with great value in understanding the complex flow pattern of the Don River.

3.2 What Is Required for Quality Measurement of Currents in the Don?

The characteristics of the equipment to be used have to play an important role in making high-quality measurements of currents of the Don River using ADCP current profiler. This means that the casing of the ADCP doppler should be made of a reliable material. For instance, titanium alloy would do perfectly.

Its advantages include the fact that it is light in weight. This provides the added advantage of easily maneuvering and deploying the ADCP flow meter at most times remote and difficult locations along the Don River. It is also highly resistant to corrosion. Given the chemical content of the water and the environmental conditions within Russia, this corrosion-resistant property of the titanium alloy ensures long-term accuracy and reliability of the ADCP.

Besides, in order to conduct extensive measurement along the Don River, the ADCP meter should be powered by low power consumption, thus low cost. Low-power-consumption ADCPs can conduct continuous running for longer periods, therefore, they will be more suitable in conducting continuous monitoring. Cost-effective ADCPs can be deployed more extensively without entailing higher financial costs.

3.3 How to Choose the Right Equipment for Current Measurement?

In the case of the selection of the proper ADCP profiler to measure the Don River current, determination should be heavily based on the purpose of the equipment. For instance, if the interest is horizontal flow across a section of the river, then a Horizontal Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler would do. HADCPs are designed to measure with good accuracy the horizontal velocity components of the water current.

This would involve vertical flow profile measurements, and a better choice would be VADCP. VADCPs are configured to measure the velocity of the water at various depths along a vertical line in the river.

For frequency, a 600 kHz ADCP shall be able to work in the shallower parts of the Don River for water depths up to approximately 70 meters. Where the flow is deeper, a 300 kHz can be helpful; this one should allow good measurements up to approximately 110 meters.

There are well - known ADCP brands such as Teledyne RDI, Nortek, and Sontek. However, for a cost - effective option with good quality, China Sonar PandaADCP is worth considering.
