How to Measure Water Current of Vitim River?

Learn about Vitim River, its flow rate, and how to measure its water current using ADCP, including working principle, equipment needs, and selection.

1. Where is Vitim River?

The Vitim River is a considerable stream across the vast and icy areas of Siberia, Russia. It is looked upon as the chief formation of the Lena River. The source of the Vitim River has its roots in the Barguzin Range, within the South Baikal Mountains.

From its source, the Vitim River streams across a mountainous and thinly populated area of Siberia. It cuts through taiga forests dominated by coniferous trees such as spruce and pine. Different forms of wildlife along its banks include reindeer, sables, and various species of birds adapted to the cold climate. Small indigenous settlements also exist that the river passes through. These communities have a traditional way of life based on fishing and hunting. The Vitim River waters have long been used for transportation, and in winter, it freezes completely and turns into an ice road.

The Vitim River meanders through the wilds of Siberia, forming part of the local ecology in important ways. It forms part of a complex water system that nourishes the peculiar flora and fauna of the region. The river's flow contributes to the surrounding soil and vegetation with the nutrients and sediments brought by flooding and high-water periods.

2. What does the Flow Rate of the Vitim River resemble?

The flow rate of the Vitim River is highly variable, in fact, by season and according to the depth of snow melt and rainfall in its expansive watershed. During the spring thaw-a critical period in all of Siberia-the flow rate of the Vitim River increases dramatically. This happens when snow gathered over long winter months melts and the river can burst with a very high increase in water volume. During such times, the average flow rate may reach several thousand cubic meters per second.

During winter, the flow is much smaller; in fact, parts of the river may completely freeze in particularly cold years, except for a trickle that remains beneath the ice. This layer of ice changes the way in which the river flows. For example, in spring when the ice is melting it may cause sudden rises in the water level and velocity.

The flow of the Vitim River basically plays an important role in ecological balance, including the huge taiga forests it caters to for water and supports the survival of several aquatic and terrestrial species.

3. How to Measure Water Current of Vitim River?

There were various traditional and modern ways of measuring the water current of the Vitim River. Traditional techniques also involve the use of floats. A float that is disposed into the river, by observing the entire travel over a known distance and time, can provide an estimate of the surface current speed. The other traditional technique involves the use of a mechanical current meter. These meters are kept at certain points in the water to determine the velocity directly.

However, a more advanced and constructive means is through the use of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP). ADCPs allow for a better understanding of the current profile of the river.

3.1 How do ADCPs using the Principle of Doppler Work?

Basic Principle: ADCPs are based on the Doppler effect. The ADCP current meter send acoustic pulses into the water. Due to the nature of the Doppler effect, as these pulses move through the moving water particles, their frequency when reflected back changes. This shift in frequency is analyzed to produce an estimate of the velocity of the water at a number of depth intervals.

The ADCP current profiler has several transducers that transmit acoustic signals in different directions. These transducers can measure both the horizontal and vertical components of the water flow. This will give a three-dimensional mapping of the water current, an immense contribution to understanding the very complex flow patterns of the Vitim River.

3.2 What is Required for Fine Measurement of Currents in the Vitim River?

In order to make a high-quality measurement of the current in the Vitim River by means of ADCP doppler, the basic characteristics of the equipment have to be very important. The casing of the ADCP flow meter should be made from something reliable, and for this, titanium alloy is an excellent choice.

Consequential advantages of this titanium alloy include its light weight; hence, it is easy to maneuver and deploy the ADCP profiler in many remote and inhospitable places along the Vitim River. Besides, it shows excellent resistance to corrosion. With the cold climate and the chemical composition of the water in the Vitim River, the corrosion resistance of the titanium alloy would mean long-term accuracy and reliability for the ADCP meter.

Besides, in the case of extensive measurements along the Vitim River, low power consumption and low cost are desired features of acoustic doppler flow meter. The low-power-consumed ADCP can keep working longer and is thus fit for continuous monitoring. Cost-effective ADCP can be installed more widely without leading to a high financial cost.

3.3 How to Choose the Right Equipment for Current Measurement?

Intended use is central in the choice for the measurement of the Vitim River current using an acoustic doppler velocity meter. When a current that needs to be measured is horizontal, flowing across a section, then a tool which would best apply is called Horizontal Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler. HADCPs are designed to give good measurements of horizontal water current velocity components.

In the case of vertical flow profile measurement, a Vertical Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler or VADCP is superior. VADCPs are designed to measure the speed of water at various depths along a vertical line in the river.

For the frequency, the 600 kHz ADCP can be applied to depths up to about 70 m deep in the shallower part, while the 300 kHz ADCP is recommended for deeper parts since reliable measurements are available only up to approximately 110 meters.
