Principle of ADCP
The ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) operates based on the Doppler effect. The instrument transmits acoustic pulses into the water column. When these sound waves encounter suspended particles or plankton, they are scattered back toward the transducer. Due to the motion of water, the frequency of the returned echoes is shifted slightly (Doppler shift). By analyzing these frequency shifts, the ADCP calculates the velocity and direction of currents at multiple depths.
With its multi-beam configuration, an ADCP can measure an entire current profile across the water column simultaneously. In bottom-tracking mode, it can also determine the velocity of the platform relative to the seabed.
The China-Sonar ADCP Series, including ADCP-1200K, ADCP-600K, and ADCP-300K, provides high-precision measurements for a wide range of environments. Typical applications include river discharge measurement, coastal and estuarine current monitoring, offshore engineering, deep-sea research, and long-term ocean observation.
